The Yutog Nyingtig has four groups of deities that can appear in art - initiation, meditation, guruyoga and protectors. The main protector deity is Mahakala accompanied by eight figures. Depending on the liturgical text between four and seven of the attendant figures can be depicted riding nine-headed animal mounts.

The protector deity Shanglon is often associated with the Nyingma cycles of Medicine Buddha. Shanglon can also be associated with the Yutog Nyintig.
