Interpretation / Description

Naropa, Mahasiddha: based on the iconographic depictions of the Eighty-four mahasiddhas according to the Vajrasana system. This painting is likely part of an 85 painting set depicting the individual siddhas in a single composition and with a central painting of Vajradhara bringing the total number of paintings to 85.

At the bottom left is Lobzang Dondrub identified by inscription. The figure on the right is unidentified due to a lack of iconographic features and an effaced inscription. At the top right is a small figure of a flying Vajrayogini.

Also see the Ford 43 painting set, Dzaya Pandita 13 painting set and the Prajnaparamita block print set of 85 images all with the same iconographic depictions.
