Interpretation / Description

Chodrub Gyatso, 10th Shamar Incarnation (1742-1792), Red Hat Karmapa of the Karma Kagyu tradition of Tibetan Buddhism.

In the center of the composition is the 10th Shamarpa, Chodrub Gyatso, holding a vajra and bell to the heart. He was the elder brother to the 3rd Panchen Lama, Palden Yeshe (1738-1780). At the upper-left corner is Amitayus Buddha, and to the right side is the deity Samaya Yogini Tara. A small image of the 'Glorious Melody Shamarpa' is drawn adjacent to the ishtadevata along with an inscription. The first upper figure on the right side of Shamarpa is the 7th Zurmang Gharwang, Chokyong Namgyal. Below that is Pema Norbu and beneath him is Chogyong Palden. The protector at the bottom left is the Six Armed Shadbhuja Mahakala (Chagdrugpa).
