Little is known about the life of Sanggye Pal (sangs rgyas dpal, 1339-1420) other than who he studied with and, most notably, who he trained. Sanggye Pal was a disciple of the Sakya master Palden Tsultrim (dpal ldan tshul khrims, 1333-1399) and the Sakya/Kadampa master Togme Zangpo Pal (thogs med bzang po dpal, 1295-1369), who was abbot of Tara (rta ra) monastery from 1326 to 1333.

Sanggye Pal was an important guru to Ngorchen Kunga Zangpo (ngor chen kun dga' bzang po, 1382-1456) when the younger lama, then twenty-five years old, stayed at Shey monastery (zhe dgon).
